1. General information
The subject initiates the study of Hispanic American literature, from its origins up to the 19th century. It explores the problems of definition of the field, periodization and relations with the historical context and will be applied to the study of fundamental texts of the canon, as well as present the evolution of critical perspectives on these problems and texts.
The study will always be supported by texts, fragments and complete works of compulsory reading that the students must be able to understand and interpret
It is part of the specific Compulsory Module of the Degree in Hispanic Philology (2nd year), and is complementary to Hispanic American Literature II, taught in 3rd year, and Current Hispanic American Literature (optional 3rd-4th year)
It is related to the following SDGs:

An advanced instrumental command of Spanish is required. It is necessary for non-native students to have at least a B2 level of Spanish
2. Learning results
- Critical knowledge of the main literary currents and works of Spanish-American literature from the colonial period to the 19th century
- Ability to analyse and characterize Hispanic American literary works from colonial times to the 19tth century, their generic peculiarities and the problems of diffusion and reception.
- Ability to study Hispanic American literary works from colonial times to the nineteenth century in relation to the corresponding sociocultural context in which they are inserted
3. Syllabus
1. The discovery of a New World and the configuration of a literature.
2. Historiography of the Indies: from the Colombian corpus to the texts of the 18th century.
3. Poetry in colonial America.
4. Emancipation, literature and aesthetic trends in Latin America in the 19th century.
5. The evolution of poetry in the 19th century.
6. Narrative modalities during the 19th century.
4. Academic activities
Expository and participative classes. We will work with written materials and audiovisual media. Theoretical explanations and practice will be combined. Theoretical contents will be presented, and complete works and selections from other texts will be analysed. An active involvement of the students is expected, through activities that favour motivation, critical thinking and debate.
Activities:
1) Face-to-face lecture of theoretical (explanatory and descriptive) and practical nature.
2) Individual study and work of the students: Assimilation of theoretical and practical contents. Required reading and related work

First call
a) Continuous evaluation (if the number of students is greater than 25, only a global evaluation test may be carried out)
1. Written tests: questions on the program and readings. Weighting: 70% of the grade.
2. Research work or text analysis, or other practical activities. Weighting: 30% of the grade.
The dates for taking and submitting the tests will be distributed evenly throughout the four-month period.
b) Global assessment test (on the date established in the academic calendar)
1. Written test: questions on the syllabus and readings. Weighting: 70% of the grade.
2. Research or analysis work on texts or problems of the period. Weighting: 30% of the grade.
Aspects common to both modalities:
Criteria: the understanding of the theoretical concepts and the knowledge of the mandatory and complementary readings will be assessed, as well as the clarity and expressive correctness.
There is the possibility of not doing the research work, analysis or practical activities. In this case, the written test will account for 100% of the grade. In order to carry out the work, if necessary, guidelines for elaboration will be proposed. Plagiarism will be penalized.
The minimum grade for averaging in each of the tests taken will be 4 (out of 10).
